The PADI Self-Reliant Diver Specialty Course is one of PADI's most advanced recreational specialty courses and is designed for experienced divers who wish to become more self-sufficient underwater.

While recreational diving is traditionally conducted using the buddy system, there are situations where divers may find themselves separated from their buddy or responsible for managing a dive independently. The Self-Reliant Diver Specialty Course teaches the skills and techniques required to safely manage these situations while improving overall diving competence and awareness.

The course focuses on developing personal responsibility, redundancy planning, advanced gas management and self-rescue capabilities. Many photographers, videographers, dive professionals and highly experienced recreational divers choose to complete this course to improve their independence and confidence underwater.

Under the guidance of an experienced PADI Instructor, you'll develop practical skills and experience in:

Advanced gas planning and management
Dive planning for self-reliant diving
Redundant equipment configuration
Emergency preparedness and risk management
Self-rescue techniques
Advanced navigation skills
Situational awareness
Emergency air supply management
Surface marker buoy deployment
Managing unexpected situations independently
Dive execution and post-dive evaluation

Throughout the course you'll complete realistic exercises designed to challenge your decision-making, planning and problem-solving abilities while reinforcing safe diving practices.

The Self-Reliant Diver Specialty Course is not about encouraging divers to ignore the buddy system. Instead, it develops the skills and confidence required to be fully responsible for your own safety and capable of assisting yourself should problems arise.

Upon successful completion, you'll earn the internationally recognised PADI Self-Reliant Diver Specialty certification, demonstrating advanced diver competence and self-sufficiency.

This course is particularly valuable for underwater photographers, videographers, dive professionals, experienced recreational divers and anyone seeking to further develop their diving skills and confidence.
